My World Cup Story Part 1
Before April 2004, I was an armchair follower of the Socceroos. Apart from watching the few live matches that I could when I lived in Sydney, I never really made any effort to travel and follow the Socceroos.
That was until i boarded a plane in Mt Isa and sat in my seat next to Frank Farina, then the Socceroos coach. My first words to Frank were, “What the F*** are you doing in Mt Isa?”. I chewed his ears off for the next 2 hours about the Socceroos and when i left the plane in Brisbane my parting words were “If you get the boys to the World Cup in Germany, I will take my family to Germany as well”. I hopped on a plane straight to Mackay and all I thought about was how was i going to get my family to Germany.
Over the next 2 days i hatched a plan and told Veronica when i eventually returned home. My idea was met with some scepticism, and many questions followed.
- How will the Socceroos make it to the World Cup?
- How much money will that cost?
- When is the World Cup?
- If we don’t go to Germany where will we go? (Assuming the Socceroos didn’t make it)
My research started, and for the next 6 months i gathered information about Germany and how to get tickets, because in my mind i was now convinced that Australia was going to the World Cup of Football.
It is now a little over 2 years until South Africa 2010, so mark down June 11- July 11 in your diary and start planning.
Although Frank Farina has a lot of critics esspecially during his time as National Coach, i credit him with my inspiration to get to Germany and spend an unforgettable holiday with my family.
Cheers
Terry

Hey Terry,
Great site mate. All the best with the plans….fingers crossed that you have much greater success following the Socceroos rather than those embarrasing Sharks!!

Cheers Chris, and thanks for the ticket, I told you the fact i was at the game meant the Sharks would loose. The Socceroos have been much more successful with me watching.
