Saving Money
I have just read an article in the paper about some boofhead from Melbourne, who wrote a book about saving money. Now I am all for saving money, as my family can attest to. They think I am a tight wad. Now I am not going to give this goose any more publicity, so I will not be mentioning his name or book, I will just call him Paul.
Here is Paul’s guide to saving money.
- Avoid family gatherings such as birthdays, Christmas and Easter
- Limit your MATES and ditch any friends who tend to live beyond their means.
- Don’t Volunteer for anything, it will cost you money.
- Ignore special days such as Mothers day, Fathers day etc. They are just marketing traps
- Don’t buy toys for your children and dress them in hand me downs
- Have a weekly blackout night to save electricity.
- Never be super sized, always buy the standard, and never get 2 for 1 deal’s.
Now I can understand to a certain degree with missing out on family gatherings, especially if there is an annoying relative you cannot stand. But buy and large, these are good days, and catching up and having a beer with the Old man, brother, sister or your cousin is generally a good thing. The only times that avoiding these functions is ok is when it interferes with a Socceroos International or any football final you are interested in for that matter.
How could anyone LIMIT their MATES? Who are you going to drink with? Who are you going to watch the Football with? Who are you going to complain about your better half to? Your mates play a pivotal role in your life, have as many as you see fit. And as for those who live beyond their means, hey, you may just get a few extra beers at the pub from him. Only ditch those MATES who deliberately shirk their shout, they are the ones not worth having.
Volunteering is a great community thing to do. SO what if you have to fork out a few bucks for something. I am a volunteer lifesaver, and sitting in the bar after patrol with a few mates is a very satisfying experience.
NEVER ignore mothers day or your partners birthdays people. Always be good to your mother and the mother of your children. If you forget this day, how are you going to get that new Socceroos Top for Fathers Day, or your Birthday? I believe in Karma, and the act of giving. What you give out comes back to you. If you give crap, you will get crap.
How can denying your children toys and dressing them in hand me downs be a good thing? You might save money but eventually they will find out what you are doing and it is all over red rover. They will either badger you into submission for real expensive stuff to make up for the stuff they missed out on. Or they will never speak to you again, or at least for a very long time. What if you dressed your young son (a Liverpool supporter) in a Manchester United shirt from you next door neighbour, with “CANTONA” on the back? A great player, but seriously, your child will never talk to you again.
I am one of those people who turn the lights out when not in the room, and drop hints to my sons about saving electricity. But a weekly blackout night is going a little bit too far. There is always a football match on somewhere, and either watching them or finding the results in the internet is every fans right.
Never be super sized! This says to me that Paul has been into one of the multinational fast food restaurants. Maybe even one of his kids tried to get a large fries and Cola. The guy has obviously never been to a Football match and paid in excess of $5 for a Mid strength beer, $10 for a burger with fries or $8 for a Pizza the size of a 50 cent piece. There is NO super sizing at the football so I don’t see his problem.
I for one will be saving money over the next month so I can have a good time with my Football mates in Brisbane and Sydney. And if I wasn’t still reeling from living beyond my means in Germany 2 years ago, I am sure I would be off to Dubai and Qatar in June as well.
Cheers
Terry

Surely thi has to be a windup. How the hell can you limit your mates? And surely re: no.7, he says never get 2 for 1 deals, but isn’t that a great way of saving cash, as your getting a free product, which would have otherwise have required being paid for at some point.
