Injustice for Travelling Fans

Injustice for Travelling Fans

As you obviously all know, the Socceroos will be playing 2 away matches in June. One in Dubai against Iraq, and the other in Qatar against, you guessed it, Qatar. Our dedicated traveling Socceroo supporters still have no information on obtaining tickets for independent travellers.

There are of course package deals available from the Fanatics. An Australian Sports Travel Company. By all means, use this company if you do not wish to organise your own itinerary. However, due to my experience during the World Cup in 2006, I cannot endorse this company on this Blog.

A mate of mine who has booked his own tour through the middle east with his wife has so far been unable to find out how to obtain tickets, as have many other Aussies who can be found on the Green and Gold Army Forum. A number of these people including my mate have contacted the FFA (Football Federation Australia), our governing body. Below is an e-mail to the FFA and their answer.

Travel Tips – 1

Travel Tips

I suppose I should start offering some sort of travel tips, especially since that is one of the main reasons for this blog.

There are many sources of information out there offering travel tips on just about every country and every conceivable thing you should check prior to traveling. I believe the most important thing to realise when traveling is that you are in another country and in many cases a completely different culture. The main thing is to accept that you are in the minority and to respect the local customs. (Except for New Zealand, England and the USA. They deserve to have the piss taken out of them :) ).

Language – Most probably English will not be the spoken language. Take some time to learn key phrases before you go, and carry a little phrase book with you.

Learn the how to say

  • Hello
  • Goodbye
  • Thank you

Any handbook will have a list of popular phrases.

Australia v China Accommodation in Sydney

Australia v China Accommodation in Sydney

For those of us traveling to Sydney to watch this match we will need some accommodation. I have chosen half dozen Hotels in the Sydney CBD for between $80 and $129 per night Double room. I have chosen Sydney CBD as there is very little at the stadium besides the Novotel at $179 per night and Ibis at $110 per night. These will probably go quick as well. These hotels are also within easy walking distance of either Central Station or a Station on the City Circle.

There are many ways to book your accommodation, and you should choose the best way that suits you. I have used Not 1 Night to obtain these prices but you could use many other sites to do this or wait until close to the game and see the options that Wotif.com comes up with.

4 Stars

Citigate Sebel Hotel – $139 per night

Park Regis Hotel – $132 per night

3 Stars

Y Hotel Hyde Park – $83 per night with Continental Breakfast

Central Regent – $129 per night

Pensione Hotel – $115 per night

2 Stars

Macquarie Boutique Hotel and Brewery – $79 per night

When making your decision make sure you know what the rate includes

  • Number of guests
  • Does it include breakfast? (The Ibis will charge you $27.50 per person)
  • Parking, on site or in nearby parking stations
  • Airport Transfers, free or charged?

Please note that the Novotel and Ibis Hotels at Olympic Park share Lobby, Reception, Bar and Dining facilities

International SIM Card

International SIM CardInternational SIM Card

Do you want Cheap Phone calls from your Mobile phone when you are next overseas? Either calling back home or finding your mate in that bar around the corner that you just can’t seem to find.

Did you know that when you ring your mate around the corner, you are actually making an international call back to Australia then an International call to the country you are in. Also your mate will pay for receiving that call.

Wouldn’t you rather be spending your hard earned cash on sampling the local brew or just having fun whilst following the Socceroos?

I have just found out about TravelSIM. You purchase an International SIM card which is yours for life and all you do is add credit to it. It will work in most phones and works in 144 countries. (Unfortunately not in Qatar where some of you Aussies may be heading in June.) But in Bahrain the call rate is a flat 60 cents per minute and free to receive calls. Check out their web site for what countries it works in.
